Live in the D: Heart of Detroit – MI Cookie Project

well there is one bakery in Detroit that’s doing much more than just cooking it has a sweet mission to help others whom you know maybe not normally have the same opportunities as the rest of us that’s right well mitch albom shows us what’s being done with my cookie project [Music] the bakery is buzzing cookies muffins and pastries are coming out of the oven the my cookie project founded by retired special ed teacher Maggie Gibson is open for business well I taught 40 years 20 of those years were in a commercial bakery special education in the commercial baker correct I discovered that a lot of our students after the age of 26 didn’t have a lot available for them and I wanted to offer opportunities with a purpose everybody has a talent whether you have an intellectual disability or not four days a week Maggie and her team of bakers who are either intellectually challenged or on the autism spectrum taken fill orders for the sweet tooth customers was the first cookies that you made Oh chocolate chip can’t go wrong with chocolate and now we’re making probably on a busy day 40 dozen the dozens of cookies and treats are being sold at farmer’s markets and community events fulfilling Maggie’s lifelong dreams seeing my students grow and become independent which is what’s happening here with the bakery and besides giving a purpose to our folks is to teach the community that people with disabilities can work [Music] in cooking it’s lots of fun we have a lot of fun doing what she loves to do with the community of people she loves to do it with Maggie Gibson is baking sweet treats for the Soul right here in the heart of Detroit Wow so many cookies a day well joining me now in studio are Maggie Gibson and Carrie buhay thank you so much for being here thank you for inviting us this is exciting so how have you seen the my cookie project changed the lives of your workers well we have a number of goals at my cookie project and the first goal is to provide purpose and and skills training and it’s amazing in the past two years that we’ve been open how independent our bakers are and how they can run the bakery all right so do you think that there’s an unseen barrier that’s keeping people with disabilities out of the workforce when they could be doing jobs that they really can perform there is its knowledge and communication and that’s another one of our goals that my cookie project is to teach the community that people with disabilities can work absolutely the right skills all right so Carrie what’s your favorite part of working at the bakery ah it did cook cookies and cookies making cookies yeah yes how about eating cookies really it it is good for us good good now here’s the big question because I’m gonna go with your suggestion what is your favorite flavor where is it a book and is it a great and watch what’s your favorite flavor flavor of cookie follow-up is cookies a day the tub or is it peanut butter chocolate chip barbell abolish policy shapes okay okay yep well I’m gonna just go ahead and dig in is that okay yeah chocolate chip this is an awesome so how can people help you out hey Edie you know cookie I’m happy to be happy and be happier perfect we are just building our website but we are on Facebook and we would love for you to to see us we are a 501 c3 nonprofit we are licensed by the Department of Agriculture and you know so we’re happy to take donations we love volunteers okay but where can we buy these cook one bite and I’m sold this is all very good so we’re located at st.
